Hugh Cantlie was for twelve years in the Army and then qualified as a Chartered Surveyor. During his time as a surveyor he spent five years in Germany developing a major office block in Frankfurt and a Shopping Centre in Munich.

On his return to the UK he became involved with conservation. He was on the main committee of the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings (SPAB); the Advisory Board of the Conservation Diploma Course at the College of Estate Management and was the Surveyor for the Monument and Historic Buildings Trust. He was involved with the rescue of several historic buildings such as Billingsgate Fish Market and Belford Hall in Northumberland where he lived for a number of years.

He is the author of Ancestral Castles of Scotland and subsequently the first of many editions of this guide book.

He now lives in Oxfordshire where in his spare time he does pen and wash drawings of houses, apart from those in this guide.
